“There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal…it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit — immortal horrors or everlasting splendours. This does not mean that we are to be perpetually solemn. We must play. But our merriment must be of the kind (and it is, in fact, the merriest kind) which exists between people who have, from the outset, taken each other seriously – no flippancy, no superiority, no presumption. And our charity must be real and costly love, with deep feeling for the sins in spite of which we love the sinners — no mere tolerance, or indulgence which parodies love as flippancy parodies merriment. Next to the Blessed Sacrament itself, your neighbor is the holiest object presented to your senses.”
Last night we all went up to Decatur to get our milk (yes, we drive to a local dairy up there about twice a month for milk.) They didn’t tell me diversification doesn’t have to apply to your grocery shopping! We hit 4-5 different places to cover our grocery shopping. Sorry. Rabbit trail.
As I was saying, we go get milk and then often will stop off on the way home and eat dinner with the Tullys. We did this last night and as we were getting dressed to leave Joel says to me:
Joel: Mom. I want to be handsome.
Me: You’re handsome all the time, bud.
Joel: No, I want to be handsome I mean, like, wear my hat (his black, felt cowboy hat), and a nice shirt and my beeelt…
Me: Oh, ok. You want to be HANDsome.
We went in and picked out a polo and some jeans that are too short. He insisted on wearing them so he could wear his belt. A minute or so later;
Joel: Ok, now I need my big brown jacket (this is his Carhart coat).
Me: No, Joel its summer. Its hot. You aren’t wearing a coat.
Joel (after some arguing): But, that’s how I be handsome!
Me: Well, you have a winter handsome look and a summer handsome look. Your coat is part of your winter handsome look because its hot right now.
Thats settled it although we did determine he needs a straw hat! The felt ones are really not for summer wear either.
Anyway, he looked so cute, as usual and it just killed me when he said he wanted “to be handsome.” I love that he wants to dress well and wear nice things already at 4 years old!
A few weeks ago I noticed my father-in-laws very raggedy American flag flying in his back yard. I commented something like, “You think it’s time to get a new one of those?” I didn’t realize he was keeping it up like that on purpose. He says he will take it down when Jerod gets home. For anyone reading who doesn’t know, my brother is in Afghanistan until this summer. He left last summer. He did get to be here for Rosalinds birth last Spring but missed Joel’s 4 years ago because he was on tour in Iraq.
Here are some snap shots of that flag, Jerod!
Waiting for you to come home safe and sound. Love.
I still plan to finish getting posts from Christmas up and now, of course, I also have pictures from Joels 4th birthday. I am always behind and I think I have good reason. Actually, I HAD good reason and now I have REALLY good reason as we have recently added a new baby to the family. Her name is Belle and she is a 2 month old Golden Retriever. I don’t even have a good picture of her to post at the moment (if that tells you a little bit about whose idea the puppy was… *Hint – NOT MINE!) Really though, she is growing on me and is very cute and is very smart. We have had her for 1 week and she has already taken so well to much of her training. She will be a great member of the family.
My real reason for postings is just to share a few pictures. It’s January and even in our part of Texas that usually means cold, ice, and some snow. This year we are half way through and you would think its been April for the majority of the last few weeks. We have been at the park and out in our back yard. Its great zoo weather and I even saw a guy riding his bicycle shirtless yesterday! I, myself, was wearing flip-flops :) We even have wild flowers growing in the back yard. Joel brings me flowers from the yard. Some of them are the fuzzy white dead ones. I think they are what used to be dandelions but he likes the way they look. I remember picking flowers for my mom. Most moms, I know, have the same kind of experience but it’s so sweet, isn’t it!?
Well, we are enjoying our January. It’s usually one of the months that gets a pretty bad wrap because it has to follow December. Who wants to follow December? Especially in our house with a birthday on top of Christmas… But, hey, January does bring Girl Scout Cookies which we’ve already gone through 4 boxes of and it also brought a puppy this year!
I leave you with 2 verses:
“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” – John 15:12
“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” – John 13:35
There is about to be a SLEW of Christmas posts here. This time of year is a flurry of blogging because of the holidays and Joels birthday all in a few short months. We have so many Christmas events and I just can’t bring myself to cram them all into one looooooong post. So, look for at least 3 more after this…No, four.
Anyway, here’s Rosalind in all her cute Christmas outfit glory this year! I made sure to photograph each one!
I’m going to postpone getting my Christmas posts up in order to say,
“Happy 4th Birthday, Joelie!”
We celebrate big this weekend but today he will take several phone calls, I am sure, and can officially tell people he is 4 years old!
That’s chocolate chip banana bread with little pats of butter on top he is eating in case you were wondering… He is so proud today!
